In the old Clifton’s Cafeteria space on 7th and Grand in Downtown Los Angeles, is the newest addition to what has become Restaurant Row, Mas Malo. If you have ever been to the Silverlake outpost of Malo, you know kind of what to expect: tacos, margaritas, and a large crowd.
Having been unable to get a reservation for Friday night, My party of 4 showed up and were promptly told the wait was at least an hour and forty-five minutes in this ginormous space that could easily accommodate over a hundred diners. What’s a hungry and thirsty taco lover to do? That’s right, hit the bar. There were 2 bars, a large one on the first floor that was so crowded that the patrons were spilling onto the dining floor. But Alas! There was a second bar with a smaller crowd. Our fantastic bartender, Danny, whipped up margaritas and micheledas while I consumed my form of crack – Beef and Pickle Tacos.
As the weekend went on, it got slightly less chaotic. Brunch the next morning found me finally being able to get a table, which was fantastic, seeing as my friend probably needed both hands to wipe the sweat off of his brow from the hotness that was the Huevos Rancheros.
Dinner on Sunday would have required a reservation if we didn’t show up during old folks dining hours. The place was understaffed and some of our orders got mixed up, but that was more than fine because we had the salsa flight and chewy chips to keep our tummies full and margaritas made with, I think, Hibiscus (by another awesome bartender Bo) to keep our palates wet.
