BY CARTER MANESS
Cults nail a sound that goes back to the ’60s — an era of musical optimism, yes, but also one of bubblegum. What better way to honor and boost that eternally-hummable sound than with a remix of “Go Outside” by the soulful, Daptone Records-affiliated Menahan Street Band? The group, whose era-exact production by Thomas Brenneck has also been sampled by Jay-Z, consists of musicians from contemporary soul luminaries like Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Antibalas and The Budos Band. Here, they rock a mixture of smoky organs, bells, handclaps, sultry bass and guitar underneath the poppy vocals of Cults singer Madeline Follin. Cults’ self-titled debut is out now via In The Name Of/Columbia.
