This year’s 2011 Nike US OPEN OF SURFING in Huntington Beach, CA brought huge crowds, with an estimated 500,000 people flocking to see the world’s largest surfing competition along side pro-BMX and pro-Skate contests. Three stadiums stationed along the south side of the Hungtington Beach Pier furnished spectators on one of the most famous pieces of sand; Surf City U.S.A.
The week long event held from July 30 to Aug 7th, included pro skateboard riders
Tony Hawk and Christian Hasoi competing in the 3rd Annual Coastal Carnage Finals, along with music performances by MGMT, Jimmy Eat World, Surfer Blood, The Sounds, Dead Country, and actress Vanessa Hudgens hosting Nike’s Walk the Walk. Kelly Slater, 10-time ASP World Champion won the top prize of $100,00 in the Mens Finals, the first time in 15 years since his last win at U.S. Open. Sally Fitzgibbons from Australia edged out Cali native Lakey Peterson and took home the win in the Womens Finals. Peterson didn’t go home empty handed, she surfed her way to win the Pro Junior Womens Finals.
