Abandoned pools took over the Viper Room Friday night to debut some new song off their upcoming album “Sublime Currency”. Their first album Humanistic (2001) sold over 100k copies worldwide, but The Sunset Strip isn’t far from home for this group original founded in Westlake Village, CA.
The eager calling of Tommy Walter’s guitar riff at the beginning of Mercy kiss opened the show, the glow of the flashing lights illuminating faces of approval radiating from everyone who immediately recognized the popular song. They continued the set with more songs from Humanistic. John Spiker’s hard driving bass lines in the beginning of Flourescein captivated the excited crowd. The sounds of Daniel James’s drums began Start Over, a ballad about love that needs a reboot, which got the couples in the crowd dancing. The duel guitars of Tommy Walter and Chris Franz mixed flawlessly as the band performed Waiting to Panic. Walter announced to the audience that the next two songs were brand new and began the title track off of their currently unreleased album “Sublime Currency” and continued with Unrehearser. These songs fluidly combined the defined sound style of Abandoned Pools with more electronic instruments and effects than some tracks off their previous albums. Remedy closed out another great show for this talented group of performers.
Abandoned Pools new album “Sublime Currency” is set to release later this year, but the singles Marigolds and In Silence, both released in 2011, are currently available on i-Tunes. Abandoned Pools has a free show coming up August 31, 2011 at the Slidebar in Fullerton CA.
