Hasidic Jewish reggae artist Matisyahu returned to LA’s Club Nokia for the third stop of his tour on Wednesday. The crowd of over 1,500 fans eagerly filled the auditorium in front of a neon Brooklyn Bridge backdrop, incorporating the bands hometown into their set. The first sounds from David Homes, Joe Tomino, and Stu Brook’s instruments shook the crowd with energetic bursts of dancing and screaming which were only amplified as Matisyahu began dancing around the stage dropping samples of the speedy beat boxing in store for the concert goers. “Message in A Bottle” (The Police Cover) thrilled fans as Matisyahu climbed up a speaker, removed his Yakama and dove into the pit. The powerful messages delivered in Jerusalem and Sunshine (new song) demanded the crowd’s involvement. King Without a Crown, Matisyahu’s first big hit, got a huge reaction from fans, and allowed for an opportunity for more stage diving. Two Child One Drop put the room into a rhyme induced meditative state before Thunder brought the high energy back to the audience. A hypnotic cover of Bob Marley’s Rastaman Chant wound the night down followed by an encore of One Day.

If you have ever listened to Matisyahu it is obvious that much of his inspiration comes from his religion and the ways he finds to integrate that inspiration into his music in a way that anyone can enjoy religious or not. Matisyahu will be performing 26 more shows over the next month all across the US and Canada.
