The Teddybears took over the Echoplex on Thursday headlining Check Yo Ponytail 2’s latest event. Formerly Teddybears STHLM, this Swedish band has been rocking stages across the world for almost 17 years! Teddybears STHLM started out as a grindcore group but over time began mixing pop, rock, electronica, reggae, and many other genres into their work and today what they create an intense compilation of beats and lyrics, like mixing Daft Punk, Deadmau5, and Iggy Pop.
The show started with an entirely black stage as the title track from their most recent album Devil’s Music began. Three sets of elevated glowing red eyes were the first sight of Patrik Arve, Joakim Åhlund, Klas Åhlund. Slow spinning blue lights from the stage floor reveled the group in 5 piece suits and large bear heads, performing atop a giant mirrored bear head.
The middle bear addressed the crowd in a Swedish accent:
We are the German Shepherds! And we are here to bring you some music!
They began Get Mama a House and seamlessly flowed into Ahead of my Time, changing up the songs a bit adding LA and Echoplex into the entrancing house beats, and synthesized vocals. One of the musicians went backstage and came out in a smaller version of the mirrored bear stage piece with matching duel-necked mirrored guitar and proceeded to shred a mind blowing three minute guitar solo as the crowd exploded in a wave of heat and flashing strobes which led into Daft Remix. They played an amusing tribute to the King of Pop, No More Michael Jackson, and closed out the show belting the anthem Punkrocker in a shower of fake snow, flashing lights, and a crowd screaming for more!
The Teddybears finished their tour in San Francisco 9/16, but Devils Music is currently available on i-Tunes and the No More Michael Jackson is not available for sale yet but can be enjoyed on soundcloud.
