Jane’s Addiction began an early promotional tour for their latest release ‘The Great Escape Artist’ reaching Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, performing their most coveted hits across intimate venues. Original members Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins returned to the John Anson Ford Theatre along with their current bassist Chris Chaney. 21 years had past since the last time Jane’s Addiction performed at the Ford Theatre, which was clearly shown as the older crowd crammed into the 1400 hundred-seat venue. Farrell’s onstage demeanor revealed a more grown up and self-aware persona, dressed in a sharp suit and calm composure. But the eccentric and erratic Farrell we’ve all grown to love quickly exposed himself, stating “The West is the Best” and “Los Angeles Is My Town,” which received loud cheers from the home crowd.
Kicking off the set list was ‘Whores, which fit perfectly in the hidden hills of Hollywood. Dave Navarro’s ability to make guitar-shredding look like child’s play lasted through the entire night all while smoking a cigarette. Between songs, Farrell paced back and forth on stage, completely improvising off the crowd’s energy and provided comical transitions for each track. ‘Just Because’ and ‘Ain’t No Right’ became sing along sensations that continued well into the night. Although performing live for over 25 years, Farrell showed no signs of age as he climbed onto the drum kit and bounced across the stage screaming like a madman. As the night concluded, Navarro delivered an aggressive melody during ‘Stop!’ that had fans itching to start circle pits.
After a brief encore, Farrell returned with with a wine bottle in hand while Navarro sat beside him with an acoustic guitar. “From Los Angeles California, Juanes Addiction” screamed Farrell into the microphone as the crowd helped close the night to the hit classic ‘Jane Says’. ‘The Great Escape Artist’ is the bands 4th album and first in eight years and is currently available everywhere.
