The 10th annual Honda Civic Tour: BLINK 182 at the Hollywood Bowl

Live Review and Photos by: JACOB GAITAN

The 10th annual Honda Civic tour wrapped at the Hollywood Bowl after touring the country for three months. My Chemical Romance accompanied headliners Blink-182, with a line of Honda cars covered with Blink-182 logos and signature matted paint jobs at the entrance.

Fans sent screeching screams as lead singer Gerard Way appeared on stage to begin the hour set. My Chemical Romance’s twelve song set list began with ‘Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na),’ the second song off their ‘Danger Days’ album released last November. MCR wasted little time in playing their hit tracks, instantly following with ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise)’, which had the Bowl echoing with, sing along chants. Four songs off the last album were performed, but fan favorites ‘Helena’ and ‘Teenager’ received the loudest reactions of the night. They finished their set list with ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ and ‘Cancer’.

Having performed the first incarnation of the Honda Civic tour a decade ago, Blink-182 returned with ‘Neighborhoods,’ their first album in eight years. The three-piece act delivered a two-hour set, jam packed with classic hits and four songs off the new record. The teen angst songs that made them popular during the late nineties still seemed to draw large reactions, as they began the night with ‘Feeling This.’ The momentum continued strong with live anthems ‘The Rock Show’ and ‘What My Age Again,’ but shifted towards a mellow direction during ‘I Miss You’ and ‘Stay Together For The Kids.’ Mark and Tom’s interaction throughout the night drew loud laughs from the crowd, delivering bad jokes and one-liners between songs.

The highlight of the night was without contest Travis Barker’s drum solo performance. After taking performing ‘All The Small Things’ and ‘Josie’, the lights went out for a few minutes, drawing Blink-182 chants as each seconds went by. Over the speakers, “Can a drummer get a beat?” looped with a DJ mixing beats as Travis began a mind blowing drum solo that expended over the general pit area in front of the stage. High above the audience supported by a crane, Travis unleashed a fury of drumbeats while traveling well over 50 feet in the air. After returning to the stage, Mark and Tom closed the night with ‘Dammit’ and ‘Family Reunion’.

Blink-182 has one show currently listed for the rest of 2011, taking place in New Orleans for the Voodoo Music Experience Festival. Two European dates have been announced for next year, with more to be announced.
