Norman Music Festival Creates a Unique Experience for Musicians, Performers, Artists and Listeners
To say one event is a representation of a well rounded, culturally enhanced community is a bold statement. But for Norman, Oklahoma, that statement holds true for the fourth annual Norman Music Festival (NMF) held April 28, 29 and 30.
The event that planted its roots as an indie rock festival has branched out to an all-encompassing cultural experience for families, friends and even businesses. This year’s event added an additional day in order to provide a more diverse variety of music, entertainment and art.
“This is a very unique event in Norman,” says NMF Chairman, Robert Ruiz, “for locals and visitors to see some businesses for the first time and associate that experience with the Norman Music Festival. It makes me proud that we could be a part of that experience.”
Downtown Norman was a buzz of activity for the three-day event as approximately 47,500 people saturated the streets, shops and diners of Norman.
“The Norman Music Festival was great for us as Normanites and business owners. It was our ninth, tenth and eleventh days of business and it was a blast. We had music in front and behind our business and the community and volunteers were great. We had the comedy show, on Friday night, and we were very happy to be apart of this year’s festival and can’t wait to be more involved next year,” says Brandon Kistler, owner of The Garage.
Thursday night drew huge crowds when nearly 3,500 people paraded up and down Main Street ducking in and out of indoor venues.
Opolis, an NMF favorite, was a main feature for Thursday night with performances by locals such as Depth and Current, Student Film and many others. The venue overflowed with hundreds of fans as The Neighborhood took the stage at midnight. Just down the street, The Purple Church rocked out to a packed house at Bill & Dees and the Blackwatch Stage was alive with music from Ben Kilgore, The Work Week and others.
Guestroom Records set in motion the days activities for Friday with local favorites The Boom Bang and the Copperheads. The Latin stage took over the Jagermeister stage Friday night and was on fire all evening as listener’s salsa danced well into the night to the sounds of Alegria Real, Los Hollywood and topped the evening off with a stellar performance by Monte Negro.
Festivalgoers found more than just music Friday night. The Spectacle Stage wowed audiences with performances by Norman favorites The Prarie Folk Circus, Ashtanga AcroYoga and Magic, and so many more.
Saturday kicked off with performances by the Ali Harter, Penny Hill Party, Norman Chamber Music Composers, Monty Harper among others. Festival goers began to fill the streets, introduced to new restaurants, shops and businesses while threading through the different performance venues.
Among 35,000 attendees on Saturday, 24 commercial vendors participated along with 41 Dustbowl Arts Market vendors, 14 restaurants provided festival fare and 15 downtown shops opened their doors to the crowds.
The fourth annual event has matured into a destination for young musicians to play among national and international acts, for local artists to represent a niche of Oklahomans who create hand-made and completely original art and for business to promote to an eclectic group of individuals.
With four years under its belt, The Norman Music Festival has undoubtedly made its mark on the festival circuit. But, there is one thing that sets NMF apart from any others of its kind- it is free. Festival organizers are committed to keeping this festival free, local and all about community.
The Norman Music Festival would like to extend a big thanks to the sponsors who made this festival possible; Fender, Fowler Auto Group, Wimgo and the more than 35 other sponsors who helped keep the festival free and enjoyable for all people of all music genres. Also, thanks to the friends and fans who became VIP’s of the event.
