Chicago hard hitters Chevelle returned to Los Angeles on their latest ‘Hats Off To The Bull’ album tour. The three-piece group began their sixteen-song set list with ‘The Clincher’ causing the first of multiple circle pits across the floor. Lead singer Pete Loeffler quickly established an interactive relationship with the audience, reminding the west coast crowd they are one of the few cities that generate a strong electric energy. The stage maintained a simple appearance, decorated solely by a red Persian rug and large amps, focusing the attention on heavy melodies and fist pumping action.
The night featured five performances from ‘Hats Off To The Bull,’ the bands sixth studio album that debut last winter. Still, the crowd became the fourth member by providing sing-a-long additions during every song. ‘Vitamin R (Leading Us Along) became the first shouting competition between Pete and the audience, carrying the same momentum to ‘Closure’, which pinpoints their melodic rock roots. ‘Still Running’ received one of the loudest crowd participations of the night causing drummer Sam Loeffler to forcefully collide his cymbals until they echoed across Club Nokia. The fast paced onstage energy balanced perfectly with the heavy distortion bass lines of Dean Bernardini while everyone jumped as a pulse.
‘Send The Pain Below’ closed the night momentarily causing the audience to scream for an encore. After building enough anticipation, Pete appeared on stage and began ‘The Red’ by himself. The audience provided backup vocals until the rest of the band joined him on stage to finish the hit single. Chevelle ended their ninety-minute performance with ‘Hats Off To The Bull’s’ angry and heavy single ‘Face To The Floor.’ Chevelle is one of few bands that maintain the same clear and crisp sound from their albums on stage. They’ll continue their six-week tour through mid May that concludes in Green Bay Wisconsin. ‘Hats Off To The Bull’ debut at number twenty on the Billboard 200, selling close to 120,000 copies to date.
