LIVE REVIEW AND PHOTOS BY: Mary Grace McKernan
On the eve of the Super Moon, Edward & The Magnetic Zeros played at the Greek Theatre. And although the moon was not quite full or super, the performance by the band was spectacular. They started off the night with “40 Day Dream” and the endearing and very talented Alex Ebert joined his fellow band mates by walking through the packed theatre, making his way through the pit and then jumping on stage. The audience was immediately electrified clapping, stomping and singing along with Alex for this song and it didn’t stop until the house lights came up over 2 hours later.
The Magnetic Zeros had the confidence, talent and playfulness to come on stage without a set list – Alex would ask the audience what they wanted to hear and although this created a little lag between songs that was OK because it gave the audience time to recover from each mind blowing song. Jade Castrinos led the vocals on the very popular and audience requested “Home”. Her smooth melodic vocals accompanied by the generous and beyond talented band were definitely the pinnacle of the night. During the performance, Alex explained the song “Om Nashi Me”. He said the words are made up. Alex said the words mean, “yes, destruction” and explained, “yes and destruction are not two words that usually go together but in this case it means destruction of all the veils that surround you that don’t let you be who you really are”.
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are the real thing, talented musicians coupled with joyful and loving songs and most important a welcoming stage presence that makes everyone feel part of the performance.
