Mogwai played to a packed house at the Fonda Theatre last Friday night and after their opening song someone in the audience yelled out “louder” and minutes later the audience was practically blown out the door onto Hollywood Blvd.
Mogwai’s music is intense as are the musicians in this Scottish band. They have been labeled a post-punk-rock band and that doesn’t even begin to define their music. As humans, it is important to categorize everything and this band is definitely indefinable. The music starts out soft and slow with atmospheric sounds and then a wall of sound hits the audience with raging guitars, drums and the heaviest metal guitar sound that can be imagined. To say Mogwai is a heavy metal band wouldn’t be fair and to say they were an alternative rock band would not be accurate either.
Mogwai has definitely done the impossible with painstaking precision – they cannot be labeled.
After Mogwai played “Stanley Kubrick”, the audience seemed to be in a trance-like state. Kubrick films are known for their uniqueness and attention to detail. These are qualities Mogwai has inducted into their playing and they definitely have the talent and presence to give a knockout performance. Like a Kubrick film, Mogwai’s show was nothing short of dazzling.
