Matthew Michael Ahern Hettich goes by the moniker Wake and Proximal Records had a record release party for him last Friday night. Wake’s genre is electronic music — electronic music is sometimes defined as a sound created by machines with little human intervention. When we think of music we think of guitars, drums, horns, etc. Some of the most influential rock artist use electronic music within their songs — for example the beginning of Radiohead’s “Everything Has It’s Right Place” and Talking Heads’ “Burning Down The House”. Wake takes electronic music to a another level and Friday night he gave those who were lucky enough to be at The Satellite an education. His music is conceptual, experimental, original and it’s almost impossible not to feel happy and want to move when he starts playing his synthesizers. By the way, Wake first started playing electronic music on a synthesizer from the 80′s that was two years older than him.

Wake’s music is heavily influenced by 80′s dance music, hip-hop, pop coupled with electronic drums and bass. When he finishes a song you feel like you’ve just been on an amazing inter-galactic space ride and you haven’t even left the dance floor. His music is fun and upbeat and as much as the electronic music is enough to keep you satisfied – the most engaging part of the evening is when vocals are mixed in. Wake’s new album is called “Fifth Finger” and this is a must have album if you want to hear cutting edge electronic music. There’s no doubt Wake’s music leads the way in this genre and with songs like “Violently” (which is about when you first touch someone that you are in love with and he performed it at the party) — it will be hard for anyone to keep up with him.
