Irish noise-punk group Girl Band has released a video for the first single off of their upcoming album, Holding Hands With Jamie, due out September 25th. In it, “Paul” is a sad man who is forced to, quite literally, wear a big grin on his face. As the star of a children’s television show, his job is to dance around in a happy-looking pig costume.
As if the idea of a middle-aged man in a pig costume isn’t creepy enough, things take a turn for the worst when he grows consistently more incapable of dealing with the hardships around him, like aging family members and tense relationships with his coworkers, most notably a giant rooster. After turning to drugs and alcohol to help him cope, the pig finally snaps in an angry fist fight turned cathartic dance.
More metaphorically, the video for “Paul” speaks to the outward persona we’re all forced to wear to some extent and how taxing that can be on our mental health. It is a mesmerizing and clever way to tell a story, and the manic, chaotic, pulsing seven minute long epic that is “Paul” gives it the dark twist it needs.
