unnamedToday’s slice of optimistic sunshine comes in the form of “Wildfire” by indie artist The Mynabirds, a project masterminded by Laura Burhenn, who toured as a member of The Postal Service in 2013. The meaning of the song was inspired by beat poetry pioneer Jack Kerouac, as well as her own travels around the world.
Of the song, Burhenn states:

“‘Wildfire’ is about staying alive, staying wild, living and loving to the fullest, despite death nipping at our heels. It’s an ode to that Jack Kerouac quote from On the Road, and everyone in this world who embodies that and inspires the hell out of me: ‘The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars.’”

There’s a section of the lyrics that are so clearly an homage to the text, and the song as a whole represents it totally. The track in all feels like a firework filtered through hipster Instagram filters, disillusioned yet celebratory, detached yet exuberant. The music video itself features the singer abducting a neighboring girl after being bullied, and taking her on the wildest ride of her life around town with her friends, looking like a grunge version of Taylor Swift’s squad.

“Kiss in the darkness, just to chase it all away,” sings Burhenn with the slightest drawl over heavy folk-inspired percussion and sparkly transcendent instrumentation. It’s something that can be stripped down to sound like the perfect late-night campfire jam, or done up to fill an entire stadium of fans.
