There’s never been a more perfect time for blogosphere darlings Wild Child to release their latest album Fools. Everything about the album screams autumn from bouncy instrumentation to witty dialogue.

Drenched in a mature peppiness, Fools sees a little bit of evolution from their previous well-received LP The Runaround, while their 2013 effort saw a series of sonic vignettes, there’s a warm richness that runs through each song that makes this one of the most cohesive album the group’s released yet. However, variety of emotion and lyrical content is still found all throughout the record in the whirlwind frustrations of “Break Bones” or the end-of-the-movie-credits ready “Trillo Talk.”

Lead vocalist Kelsey Wilson is in perfect control of her instrument, knowing when to add that Texan twang to her voice or to lead with jazz-inflected nuances, feathery or piercing, carefree or serious. There’s a melancholy found throughout the album. Likely a combination of the frontwoman’s parents divorcing as well as her own separation from her fiance, that melancholy can be delivered as sassy detachment in “Stones” or a downtrodden wistfulness in “Reno,” but it’s always present and it’s always genuine. The production is well thought out, evoking innovative contemporaries like Lake Street Dive or The Head and the Heart, with harmonies laden over grooves and rhythms constructed by instruments that know what they’re doing. Wilson’s storytelling vocals combined with poignant Paramore-doing-folk-esque lyrics and a set of solid melodies throughout the album are what allows Fools to rise above unambitious folk-pop ditties rehashing the same instrumentation and base throughout each song, proving themselves to be more eclectic and honed in musicality than your average band.

Wild Child’s Fools will be released October 2nd, 2015 and is available for pre-order now on iTunes with three songs available for instant download. Tour dates can be found on the band’s official website right now.
