The Swedish are coming! The Swedish are coming! On May 23rd, at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, Shout Out Louds played to a packed house and the audience danced and sang a long with them for over 90 minutes. The words of their songs are on the melancholic side but you’d never know it from the dance–party atmosphere that was happening in the audience. Maybe that’s why the Shout Out Louds are so popular, everyone just wants to dance their troubles away.

Hailing from Birmingham, Peace are a young four-piece pointing the way for a new generation of British guitar bands. Their debut release, EP Delicious (out in USA in February), has a sense of adventure and playfulness that led it to enter the UK iTunes chart at 14, surprising everyone, especially the band. Singer Harrison said “Up until now we’ve been working a a release rate of 1.5 songs a year, so this is us basically smashing our personal best. I can’t really work out what EP ‘Delicious’ is but I think that’s the best way to feel.”

If there is one person, who has been causing a stir on the international club circuit recently, it is Barcelona’s John Talabot. Already his debut “My Old School“ (which is meant literally by the way) on Permanent Vacation in 2009 and shortly after that the single “ Sunshine”, which he put out on his own Hivern Disc imprint, made him one of the most promising musicians of the Spanish electronic scene. And those two releases also already set the mark for John Talabot’s unparalleled music: raw, loopy, heavy on the kick drum, sample based, moderate on the tempo, distorted on the drums and light years away from the clean and ever revolving house sound of today. This unique style which also blends influences from afro beat, Detroit techno, Chicago house and cosmic disco, but also northern soul or the energy of Flamenco, immediately turned some heads around. James Murphy, Âme and Aeroplane started including Talabot music in their sets like it was the most natural thing. However – and this is quite rare – he not only gained legions of fans in the house and disco community, but also amongst the leftfield pop and indie rock followers. NME and Resident Advisor both had “Breakthrough“ features on John Talabot and he can be proud of a “Best New Music“ dubbing on Pitchfork. (Being rather elusive on showing his face in magazines or the web it also came to some funny rumors that John Talabot was the alter ego of a well-known techno producer from Detroit).

The roller rink is cracked. Summer is seeping in. The lacquered floor boards are all warped, but the disco ball spins. Ladies and gentlemen, Black Moth Super Rainbow has left the woods, and the man called Tobacco lords over a gang of demon skaters from the DJ booth of some greased up auditorium in a lost corner of Pittsburg. The band’s fifth LP Cobra Juicy declares death to hippies, excising all things flower power and tightening up what sprawl there was into a nastily bright pile of fuzzed guitar, live bass, hot synths and stubby rhythms—eleven pieces of hard candy licked, dipped in dirt, and wrapped up for you.

Spose is pretty different than your typical rapper. He’s a 27-year-old skinny white guy. He doesn’t rap about drinking or clubbing or throwing money at strippers. Instead, he raps about paying his bills, his favorite sports teams and even doing mundane chores, like the dishes. For his self-released album “The Peter Sparker Mixtape,” Spose presents 13 tracks that are truly representative of his skills and style. After being dropped from Universal in 2010, he’s not looking for anyone’s approval or even mainstream radio-play. You won’t find pop tunes on this album, but plenty that will grab your attention and stick in your head like one.

It was a two for one event at the Avalon last night. An aggressive crowd shoved its way to the Hollywood stage to start with a highly energized dance party for Dragonette. Starting precisely at 9pm, as the set time promised, the trio took the stage by storm. Singer Martina Sorbara lifted the crowd to movement with their hour long set, playing tunes primarily from their newest album “Body Parts.” This album is far from revolutionary, but the fun, pop dance nature of Dragonette’s sound was heightened by a peppy performance, making their set an absolute blast. They played popular hits like “Hello,” “Let it Go” and “My Legs.” Some highlights included Martina’s performance of “Right Woman” and “My Ghost.” Martina was sultry and enticing as she sang “Right Woman” and her soaring belt on “My Ghost” was touching and emotional. They ended their set with a hit from 2009 album “Fixin’ to Thrill.”

Inspired by the Herman Wouk novel of the same name, Youngblood Hawke was born out of late night creative musings between longtime friends Sam Martin and Simon Katz. Exhausted by two years of touring with their band Iglu and Hartly and the general turbulence that comes with music industry success, Martin and Katz looked for a more simple creative outlet where they could write and share music with friends and family without commercial pressures. Katz’s longtime friend Tasso Smith moved to Los Angeles from Texas to join the band when he heard the first demos, and Alice Katz, who was a key part of the original songwriting sessions, joined as well. To round out the lineup they recruited drummer and friend Nik Hughes. They are currently finishing up their first self-titled album due out 2011.
Youngblood Hawke captures the sound of 5 friends in mid-journey. It is the snapshot of a state of mind where one mountain has been climbed, and there are more in the distance. But for right now, the view is beautiful.

On the heels of Dead Leaf Echo’s west coast tour, the special edition 7” is available on their website, www.deadleafechonyc.com . The Sensual Harassment remix is very different from the original single, which sounds like a throwback to early-90s British alt. rock (picture The Verve). The remix seems to keep with that time period, but sounds much more new-wave and electronic. From the intro of the snares in the beginning of the track to the vocals an wobbling moog-inspired synth, Sensual Harassment does a wonderful job of taking the core prettiness in the original track and re-purposing it for a different genre.

Singer TC held his own as his trilling falsetto filled the room, only occasionally getting lost ad mist the heavy electronic beats and flourishes. The chemistry between the group members stood out the most in this performance – everyone seemed like they were the greatest of friends (with a bit of a sexual charge) and they were having a blast on stage. After playing a few new songs and old favorites like “Sisters,” they closed their quick 35 minute set with energetic tune “Never Over” that left the crowd moving and amped for headliner Little Boots.

Lauren takes control of the lead vocal line, with a gravel to her voice that’s organic and warm. Her voice marries well with Monroe’s and together they “ooh” and “ahh” their way through this joyous tune. This song makes you want to run outside and skip through a lush meadow full of blooming daisies. It’s the perfect song for springtime. “We are all alive,” Lauren reminds us. And boy does it feel good to be alive.

Motorhead are a British heavy metal band formed in London in 1975 by bassist, singer and songwriter Lemmy, who has remained the sole constant member. The band was part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, which re-energized heavy metal in the late ’70s and early ’80s by adding influences from punk rock such as speeding up the tempo and toughening up the sound. Motorhead was unique in its hard blues-based sound and appreciation for old rock and roll along with its overwhelmingly loud and fast style of heavy metal. Usually a power trio, Motorhead had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and, particularly, No Sleep ’til Hammersmith cemented Motorhead’s reputation as one of Britain’s foremost rock bands.

Long gone are the reverb-soaked days when Louis would be heard at gigs asking the soundman to turn the reverb on his vocals up between every song, whilst also requesting they not even turn it off between songs when he speaks to the audience (something that is a commonplace practice for most musicians) because he didn’t like to hear himself in the monitors without it.

Hot on the heels of the breakthrough success that was last year’s single ‘Crashed’ on Black Butter Records, Stay Positive -the primary creative vessel of producer Matt Farthing- returns with maybe its most colossal tune to date. Featuring none other than Hyperdub’s acclaimed leading lady Cooly G on vocals, ‘You Hate Me’ is a high-octane demonic rave-monster of a record. It takes you from nought to 60 in zero seconds, on a journey starting off in the sweaty throngs of an early 90s M25 free-party, and ending up in the darkest doldrums of 2013 bass culture. Defiant, malevolent, bone-shakingly dance-able, and hypnotically hooky, this is Stay Positive to a tee, but this time turned up to 11, and then some…

Dubbed one of the 10 Los Angeles bands to know by Pigeons and Planes, the four-piece of rockers known as Great White Buffalo are favorably positioned to stir up the music scene in 2013 and beyond. Listen to their self-titled EP and you’ll understand why they’re ranked alongside the likes of indie favorites Father John Misty and Lord Huron, among others. Engineered and co-produced by Grammy award-winning Phil Allen (Adele, Aerosmith), the layered 6-track record calls to mind influences of the Strokes, Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon while staying true to the band’s own unique sound. Considering GWB’s upcoming itinerary, which includes stops at San Francisco’s Noise Pop Festival, it is likely their fan base will only continue to multiply in the months to come.

Lyrically, Paralytic Stalks contains confessions of an infinitely more personal nature than anything Kevin Barnes has written since 2007′s Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
Amidst dark ruminations on human existence, revenge, self-hatred, and his relationship with wife Nina, one encounters an emotionally raw Barnes struggling to contain his savage thoughts: “So much violence in my head / How are we still alive?” (“Authentic Pyrrhic Remission”).
And though it’s easy to become totally immersed within the captivating power of such revelations song after song, focusing only on the lyrics would prevent you from fully comprehending the true depth of Barnes’s work.

It was a century ago when I first saw Akron/Family perform, in the tiny back room of a bar in
Brooklyn that held perhaps 20 people. Akron sat in chairs on a small stage festooned with red
velvet and small theater light bulbs, their plentiful gadgets and musical toys littering more than
a few tables – always seemingly on the verge of collapse. The young men awkwardly held
their guitars in their laps or gently played drums/percussion, apparently trying not to knock
anything over (to disastrous results) mid set. Cables and extension cords laced through their
legs, they proffered a sort of delicate, improvisational experimentalism, laced with occasional
rock grooves, but most extraordinarily, often punctuated with beautiful 4 part harmonies…

But where Tamaryn’s earlier material was rooted in traditional goth-psych overtones, The Waves represents an incredible step forward in terms of her approach. These nine songs combine driving pop and lush balladry with layered, guitar-driven atmospheres, against which Tamaryn’s voice, languid and restrained, melts against its surfaces. “In Rex, I felt I had met someone who was the right sort of player, and that we had the right chemistry to make something as good as I’d wanted. I knew that if I wanted to make an album I could really be proud of, I’d have to move to San Francisco, and focus more intently on the music we were making.”

In a musical landscape pitted with pop stars and pigeonholes, Maps & Atlases defy easy categorization, choosing to walk their own incomparable path. Beware and Be Grateful builds upon the Chicago-based band’s acclaimed Barsuk Records debut, Perch Patchwork, melding their trademark experimentalism with a more direct – though no less beguiling – songcraft. The new album abounds with invention, spanning hymnal harmonies, percolating rhythms, even, in the case of centerpiece track “Silver Self,” a full-on guitar solo. Songs like “Remote and Dark Years” and “Winter” are gloriously liquid and lyrical, channeling M&A’s maximalist creativity into a truly inviting brand of boundary-busting, asymmetrical pop.

His music has been on every blog you can think of from Gorilla vs. Bear to Pitchfork’s Forkcast, the latter of which has featured him three times in recent months and at one point in late October was the fourth most blogged about artist on the planet.

Electronic low-res ambient group Crystal Castles is known for their strong beats, pop hooks and gritty layered sound. The group played hits from all three of their albums, beginning with the opening song from “III,” “Plague” and concluding (pre-encore) with fan-favorite “Not in Love” from “II.” Platinum blond Glass left it all on the stage. Diving into the mosh pit, literally crowd surfing, and even jumping on top of the drum kit, the energy from the show was as electric as the music. Along with killer vocals, a gut-wrenching thudding bass that shook patrons to their very core, impressive electronic song-building and layering, this show was fully equipped with a complex light show full of flickering, spastic strobes. It was a raver’s dream come true as the crowd jived in time to the music. Without even stopping to speak a single time, Crystal Castles kept the crowd moving from song to song with only a few moments of a “pew pew” sounding laser show jamming session that went on a touch too long. This show doubled as a concert and dance party. You could close your eyes and pretend you were in a club with throngs of people getting their dance on or keep your eyes glued on the bad for complex, albeit dizzying, light show and performance.

Jazz-iz Christ is Serj’s brainchild, but truly is a collaborative effort between many musicians that Tankian curated to be part of the group and self-titled album. Among others, there are considerable contributions from renowned pianist Tigran Hamasyan, flautist Valeri Tolstov, and trumpet player Tom Duprey. Additional performances from Stewart Copeland and actor/musician Davis Alpay and Vincent Pedulla make for a very unique collaboration. The 15 tracks that comprise Jazz-iz Christ, a mostly instrumental effort except for 4 tracks, are an amalgam of progressive jazz, electronic, ethnic and even rock elements, displaying a unique presentation of the genre itself.

Surrounded by her father’s jazz and blues records in her childhood home of Concepcion, Chile, Soledad Vélez began to play guitar and sing at the age of 13, usually accompanying what was on the turntable. A few years later, she started a short-lived teen rock band with her sister—then moved to Argentina to pursue songwriting before being convinced by musician friends to relocate to Valencia, Spain. There, she sang in a jazz quartet before deciding to concentrate solely and exclusively on her own songs for the first time.
In 2010, Vélez released “Four Reasons to Sing”, her four-song, home studio-recorded debut EP. Her follow-up EP, “Black Light in the Forest”, was recorded at La Mina’s music studies in Seville in 2011—that year, she played at huge Spanish festivals such as Día de la Música, FIB and Primavera Sound, taking the region by storm.
“Wild Fishing” is her first full-length, as well as her first release with Absolute Beginners. Intense and propulsive, the album is a beautiful document of a woman whose stunningly penetrative voice is ready to capture the interest of a whole new set of receptive listeners across the globe.

Formed as a bedroom recording project by singer/guitarist John Robinson in 2008, Turf War became a full band in mid-2009 and began to grow a local following in their hometown of Augusta, GA before moving to Atlanta. Their style is gritty, Southern-tinged indie punk rock, with major influences from The Replacements, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, and 60 years of rock and roll. Following two years of touring, Turf War’s debut album “Years Of Living Dangerously” was released on Old Flame Records in October 2011 with production by Ian St Pé of The Black Lips. The album’s single “Cheers To The Years” made its way to Sirius XMU rotation shortly after release and was featured in Showtime’s Shameless last week. 2012 held for a major influx of live shows for Turf War, touring the southeast, midwest, and east coast, with festival stops at Fun Fun Fun Fest, Savannah Stopover, Governors Ball Music Festival, and Firefly Festival. They released the first single “Born To Run Free” off their new EP, The Great Escape, on April 2nd via Converse and will hit the road next week. A number of EPs, mostly containing remixes from Major Lazer’s debut album, “Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do” have been released since yellow-mohawked, neck chain hulaing, daggering champion hype man Skerritt Bwoy’s split from the group. “Free the Universe” is Major Lazer’s first full-length album since the split, however, and while the EPs as well as Major Lazer’s the live shows during the last tour seemed to feel a little lacking from the loss of Skerritt Bwoy’s flamboyant antics, the new album fills whatever gaps there may have been with a host of major guest talent and varied and complex beats.

Don’t let the Germanic name fool you, the first Italian band signed to HoZac and one we’ve been excited to unleash for months, Schonwald emerge here on their US debut single slithering with unsettling vibes right from the start. This two-piece unit has been surreptitiously dwelling in the shadowy corners of the European underworld for a few years now, releasing their debut LP in 2009 on a special Vinyl edition including CD on Pocket Heaven Records (Lux) and performing at festivals with the likes of UK Decay, and other similar bands, Schonwald are now encroaching on world submission with the unleashing of their long-anticipated “Mercurial” single. A chilling and hopelessly bleak drum-machine rhythm sets the tone, parting the waves of rippling darkness into a massive surge of inescapable, hushed-yet-crushing electronic melancholia. European post punk at it’s finest, Alessandra and Luca of Schonwald create a pulsing, black-lit atmospheric electronic vibration so cold, hypnotic, and simple, it’s perfect for our endlessly frozen world.

The Wall Street Journalstates “on tour behind In Guards We Trust, one of the year’s best albums, Guards muscled up, its live music less textured but no less appealing as a synth growled in the midrange along with washes of guitar feedback.” Similarly, Los Angeles Times declares “Guards toy with loud-soft dynamics, and touch on pastel harmonies and thick, almost ’60s garage rock riffs, but it’s the back and forth between keyboardist Kaylie Church and Richie Follin that sets the group apart.”
