Alan Wake 2 Rumor Confirmed for XBOX Live

Post by: Cheri Green

There are times in my gaming life when I am more than happy I own a multitude of consoles.  This is one of them.  We can expect the second Alan Wake game to arrive exclusively to the xbox 360′s marketplace.  I couldn’t be more thrilled to know I can partake in this release.

Described as a psychological thriller, Alan Wake appeared in early May 2010.  Like many, I had waited anxiously for this title to appear on store shelves.  Having known the time and care taken to create this intellectual  mind bender, I was excited to travel vicariously through his story.  Alan Wake was his own personal hero, finding pages one by one of a fictional story that ultimately foretold his future and provided direction of where he was to go in a dream like life to unravel the mystery of his plight.

Yesterday via his twitter feed, Major Nelson described this new installment as a “…fully stand alone experience.”   Here’s to hoping for greatness as this download will be solely digital.  One can only dream of epicness as we take our protagonist into another disturbing adventure.

No release date for Alan Wake 2 has been published at this time.

Batman Arkham City Review: Become the Caped Crusader

Review By: Cheri Green

Batman Arkham City just might be one of the best games I’ve played this year.  I had the opportunity to observe a buddy of mine play through the first Batman Arkham Asylum, and I remember being instantly captured with the game play.  It was a ton of fun to just sit and watch, and now that I have my hands on Arkham City, I am wowed by the way this game works.

As the story unfolded, I knew I had to get myself up to speed with the concept of having Batman running up walls, climbing fences and sides of buildings all while using that trusty grapple.  It didn’t take long  before I was fluidly flying all over the open world, directing myself confidently and landing on top of rooftops and gargoyles in that famous Batman crouching pose.

You begin in the midst of your capture as Bruce Wayne in Arkham Asylum.  The plot to unleash an operation codenamed Protocol 10 is to be disclosed before the night is over.   This act will ensure the leadership of Hugo Strange over Gotham City.  After breaking out of the prison, you communicate with Alfred to have all of your weapons dropped in a disclosed location, you save Catwoman from Two Face, and you begin to fight back against the corrupt that now inhabit the city.  As you get yourself acclimated with the world you are given, you will no doubt encounter droves of ruffians that enable you to experience the Free Style fighting that has been improved since the last game.   Sometimes I fought in Detective Mode to expose my enemies skeletons in a sort of x-ray grid like realm just for fun.  Your weapons arsenal has been upgraded since the last Batman title, you now have new gadgets like the smoke pellets that will confuse your enemies and instantly mask your immediate location causing them to become disoriented fight each other.  You will also often times see groups of gangs in the midst of battles against each others as The Joker, Two Face, and The Penguin has their own people enlisted to fight for them.

Fighting in Detective Mode

What I loved most about this installment is that you can chose your own adventure in your own time and speed.  The story and plot is pretty straightforward, however there are several sub missions to keep you busy.  Rocksteady’s Dax Ginn confirmed that the game was intended to have 40 hours of game play, plus 15 hours devoted to side missions.  I spent a cool hour just flying and cruising over the town, consulting my map and seeing where random acts of violence were occurring.   Batman Arkham City provides tons of downloadable content, including being able to play as Catwoman with her very own plot.  This isn’t just a game you play at face value.   You have access to really self direct the entire game as you see fit which makes Batman Arkham City genius.  I felt empowered to protect the city, to take it upon myself to sneak around, cloaked by the night and protect the innocent.  I was determined to stalk the evil doers like a predator, at times hanging upside down silently behind them before striking.   I vowed as I stood alone as the caped crusader, my main focus would be to work for the side of justice and the rights of the citizens.   Arkham City allows me to control my in game destiny, and that makes it a winner.

Need For Speed THE RUN – Demo Review

Review by Cheri Green

Hello, NFS.  It’s been a while.  Not since Most Wanted have I picked up another game from this 18-title franchise.  The buzz surrounding this newcomer made me want to jump all over the demo.

You come onto the scene as Jack, a “marked man” that needs to win this insane race in order to save his life.  Three thousand miles, two hundred competitors and twenty five million grand prize.  The goal seems basic:  Get yourself from San Francisco to New York.  In NFS fashion, you’ll have to dodge oncoming traffic, police, harsh terrain, and use your wits and driving skills to put the pedal to the metal over the 300 KM playing field.  The Run is by far the biggest NFS game, out tracking it’s previous title “Hot Pursuit.”

There’s a multitude of awesome “firsts” for this installment.   NFS: The Run uses Frostbite’s Engine 2 technology, which contributes to the crisp visuals and your car’s road hugging physics, and makes this the first non-shooter game to use it.  This is also the first NFS title where you exit the car and travel on foot, a neat element that I’m curious about.  Exclusive for you with the serious need for speed, a designed 2012 Porche 911 Carrera S, and the Pagani Huayra.

As for the Demo’s first level, you hit the ground running…Literally.  The first race you’re thrown into is in the desert, with a “Pass Ten Opponents” as a challenge.  I almost wasn’t ready for the power the 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo I was was given.  I had to remember to maneuver myself accurately, or I’d spin out on the sudden golden arrowed TURN RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW curves and completely set myself back.  Guess what? There’s zero room for failure in this game.  Your ability to drift on curves, or slide past someone without touching them will bring you to victory faster.  Where Most Wanted and other titles encouraged you to hard core damage everything around you (even gave you points for crashing into other cars), this game said, “Haha. No, way.”  I beat my challenger gamer friend at a mere 2.20 seconds.   Next demo level, you’re about 1,900 miles away from your New York destination.  It’s an icy, slippery slope called Independence Pass with the instructions “Get Down the Mountain.”  I have to admit right here I completely wrecked my car twice.  I was totally unprepared for the falling avalanche of rocks, debris, snow and fire that were being tossed at me left and right while I’m tapping out at my top speed of over 190mph.  While boulders were dropping onto the track and falling beside me, internally I was screaming at myself, “LEFT!! RIGHT!! LEFT!!  RIGHT!!”  Getting yourself off of a crumbling frosty mountain by far was a challenge, but one I am proud to say beat on my first run.

If you love racing, competition so crazy you’ll want to start throwing things around the room when in that last split second you made what seemed to be a good decision at the wrong time and completely threw the race, sexy fast custom made cars and a whole lot of adrenaline pumping action, then let’s see if you can try to beat me.

Need For Speed: The RUN hits stores November 15, 2011 for all consoles including the Nintendo DS and Wii.
