Facebook: Next Popular Gaming Platform

Facebook has become one of the most visited websites on the Internet in the last 5 years. Facebook was meant for social networking but many companies found a way to have gamers still be social through flash games. Everyone by now has heard of Farmville and Mafia Wars, but those aren’t the only games that are on the popular social networking site.

AllFacebook.com posted a very interesting statistical GIF (click picture to the left) stating information that goes against most hardcore gamers. Not only that 70 percent of those playing the games on Facebook are women, but that also approximately 20 percent of Facebook gamers have purchased in-game items. With gaming on Facebook having a different demographic than most of the gaming industry, I’m interested to see how they’ll be able to adapt and create more games bringing more of the mainstream gamers to Facebook for gaming.

Regardless of what people think, Facebook IS the next popular gaming platform. What do I mean by this? The Xbox 360 and PS3 are two different gaming consoles that bring people to an entertaining and interactive platform. Many people in the gaming industry still believe that Facebook has not made an important impact. This may actually be true, but with the statistics growing every day of gaming my belief in Facebook growing more popular in the industry grows stronger. After ‘what’, the next question is ‘how’: how will Facebook be the next popular gaming platform? Advertising, merchandising and communities.

While advertising and merchandising go hand-and-hand, these are the most crucial part of grabbing attention for those games. Zynga has found a very successful way to push in-life products to bring those gamers on the go back online to take care of their farms. At 7 Eleven, you’ll find all kinds of snacks and soda products that symbolize something similar to an in-game item for Farmville. On the right side of the website, Facebook has advertisements. The most successful way to get people into new Facebook games is having your game advertise consistently during the hours that your specific demographic is online. My last point is community; Facebook games always have some kind of community whether it’s through the actual game page or in-game. When you have a way to bring people together with a game, your game will become a social haven where you’ll keep players coming back. I don’t know the demographic on how many people spend money depending on how your friends spend money on games, but I would think friends would always being competing to try to have the best equipment, buildings or plants.
