Dead Space 2

It’s been a while since the release of the first game in the Dead Space series, and after a brief side tour with a prequel playing as a rail shooter, we’re back on track with the story, following our hero, Isaac Clarke, as he dismembers more horrible creatures.

The story picks up more or less right off from the ending of the first game, and it wastes little time in getting you right into the action.  One brief cutscene and you’re sent off, running and dodging your way through the horrible masses of tangled flesh that make up the different enemies you’ll encounter.  Personally, I didn’t find the story that original in its content. Hardly a turn came that I wasn’t already expecting.  It doesn’t mean it’s not a fun game, just don’t expect anything to take you by surprise within this game’s storyline.

If for some reason you did miss the first Dead Space, you’re in luck here.  The game comes packed with an entire recap of the first game’s story, giving you everything you need to know in about five minutes.  While it’s not every little piece of information you might find if you were to play the original, it still fills you in nicely, and it’s something I hope more game developers do in the future, especially in the age of sequels we live in today!

The gameplay itself is a massive step up from the previous title.  The controls for Isaac are top notch, playing out like most modern third person shooters.  With ease, I was able to destroy most any enemy that came my way, aiming perfect and precise, easy to place each of my shots.  This, though, tends to have a negative impact on the game’s feeling.  With being able to destroy the creatures before me so easily, it makes a game that focuses on horror aspects, hardly scary at all!

In the end though, Dead Space 2 is still a good romp through a sci-fi horror story.  If you loved the first game, you’ll love this one.  If you’ve not picked up the first one, you can still get everything you need in a better handling package, right here.
