Sony vs Geohotz Resolves – What Will Happen With Defense Money That Was Donated?
Over the last couple of months, George Hotz ‘GeoHotz’ has been defending a case against Sony for potential piracy on the Playstation 3. Sony and Mr. Hotz have made a settlement outside of the court room resolving the issue. Now that the case has been laid to rest, those people who donated to the hackers aid have a question: what is going to happen to the rest of the money that was donated? Will George just pocket the money and run, as the stereotype is for hackers?
Geohotz has sent off a $10,000 check to the Electronic Frontier Foundation from what is supposed to be the remaining money. The question is now: how much is left and how much is George pocketing? If I were him, I wouldn’t put my own money into giving to a charity when people have donated a large sum of money to me for a defense case. I’m just being honest.
In the blog post, George said this to sum up his donation:
This money goes to the EFF in hopes that America can one day again be a shining example of freedom, free of the DMCA and ACTA, and that private interest will never trump the ideas laid out in the constitution of privacy, ownership, and free speech.
