RAGE: Rediscover Your Inner FPS

Post by: Cheri Green

DOOM. QUAKE.  Ring a bell? If it does, then you’re probably ecstatic over the upcoming release of RAGE.   id Software company pretty much defined the concept of First Person Shooting, so why not make the ultimate FPS with their latest post-apocalyptic open (yet directed) world release.  The background story is that an insanely large asteroid crashed into earth, and you’ve been contained in stasis by  an organization called Ark.  The time has come for you, along with other important persons (scientists, doctors, architects and the like) to wake up from years of  peaceful sleep within a frozen pod underground to help rebuild the planet.  But of course, it can’t be that easy.  By some twist of fate, Ark has malfunctioned and guess what?  No one woke up but you.

So now here you are, alone on an unrecognizable planet that’s been taken over by mutants.  You have no memory or intelligence with information about where you are, or what is going on.  Your only way to survive is to make it to the surface and try to ban together some compadres that will aid you on your mission.  There are a bout of different clans you’re going to need to avoid, and of course the mother of all the antagonists:  The Authority.   RAGE was designed to encourage the player to utilize their vast arsenal of weapons, as just selecting a “favorite” and sticking to it won’t always do the job.  Weapons can be upgraded with the cash you’ve obtained after ransacking and looting mutants you’ve just obliterated.  As the Creative Developer Tim Willis states,   “With every new environment you enter, we give you a new weapon, or a new ammo type, or a new engineering item to keep the experience fresh.  As you play the game, your arsenal grows and grows.”   Shotguns of course are standard, but RAGE offers some new kids on their block:  A crossbow, and a very hand dandy Wing Stick, which looks like a bladed boomerang with an internal gps homing device.  Another element I can’t wait to try with RAGE is the vehicle dune buggy combat game play.  In all, I am really looking forward to getting my hands on this. It’s been a while since I’ve been this excited about an FPS, and hey…Everyone’s doing it, including Charlize Theron who was at RAGE’s launch party and said, “I’ve been known to game…I’m a bit of a gamer.”  Yes, Charlize, aren’t we all?

Rage is available on all platforms starting October 4th, 2011.
