MW3 Blows Away Competition: 6.5 Million Units Sold in 24 Hours!
Just when EA thought they had the bragging rights to their release of Battlefield 3 back in October, Activision said, “Step back.” With an estimated 6.5 units flying off the shelves nationwide and in the UK, Activision broke the record for most games sold within a 24-hour period, beating out last year release of COD: Black Ops which sold 5.6 units units in the USA on it’s first day.
And how much does 6.5 million units translate into? It’s an estimated $400 million dollars made in one day! Speculation came true as Activision forecasted MW3 as being one of the biggest games to drop this year, if not ever. Revenue for MW3 continues to roll in as players purchase the extra maps and Elite service. Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing said the “[ money] generated from the map packs alone would make it the largest console title of the year.”
Not only has MW3 toppled the charts with game sales, it is now being said that it could be the highest grossing game for the xbox360. And to put the sales into perspective, we can now compare this game release to theatrical releases. “Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time,” boasts Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc.
If you were one of the fans waiting faithfully outside of your local game store at midnight in hopes of grabbing a copy of MW3, and then immediately racing home to fire it up, pat yourself on the back. Your dedication is now apart of the biggest launch in gaming history.
