Microsoft to Phase Out Microsoft Points
According to a story by Inside Mobile Apps, this is a very real possibility, and a smarter more efficient move that parallels the way we would buy an app from the App Store or Android Market.
Will this change the way we “purchase” XBLA DLC, Zune, or Mobile Windows phone content? It should actually be a more than smooth transition as money will no longer be converted to “points” and users will never have to guess how many points they have to have in order to complete a transaction.
This should halt the frustration of only being able to buy points in increments, rather than just selecting something to buy. Most have experienced trying to buy content, and suddenly you don’t have enough points. Games currently purchased through the XBOX Live Marketplace are already represented in dollars, while the DLC and add-ons are shown as points, this conversion will bridge the gap between points and dollars and make all transactions standardized. What about all of your points you still may have after the switch? They will adjust back into dollars automatically. Microsoft Points will be phased out by the end of 2012.
