If you’re looking for your next challenge, step up to the plate and download Hero Academy, a FREE iOS game available now. Developed by Robot Entertainment, Hero Academy is filled with strategic and sometimes perplexing game play as you make your way across the board to destroy your opponent’s crystals. With such an simplistic goal, one would think that traversing over the landscape while wielding your weapon or power of choice is a pretty cut and dry scenario. What makes Hero Academy unique is the actual critical thinking that is involved directly after deploying your characters, and since you have the opportunity to play others from all over the world, no two games will ever be alike. The talents that are cleverly kicked out into the bottom portion of the playing field are always at random, and what helped you in a previous battle may not do the same justice in your other ongoing games, forcing you to make exact and wise decisions.
What I enjoyed most is what some might find as the game’s one downfall: The confined option to only make five total moves. You might find yourself arming yourself with a sword, advancing a few tiles forward and striking your opponent once over the head before you’re fresh out of turns to utilize. I feel that this really forces you to crucially decide on the moves you make, and be prepared to deal with the permanent consequences. You must also be well versed in every potion, weapon, and attack combination. Learning about how to combine my powers and moves I chose to make has been a very delightful and fun experience. I felt this imagination gave the right amount of depth this game needs to be as successful as it is.
The free version of Hero Academy comes with a team of General Council, a human race that is described as coming from multiple human kingdoms, using bravery and honor in their fighting techniques. The only other available team that you can purchase for $1.99USD is the Dark Elves, sneaky characters that can suck the life out of their foes and resurrect phantoms from lifeless opponents and use them at their own will. According to the Hero Academy Store, another race will be available soon, but has not been announced at this time.
