Since its inception, noir has been a part of fiction and pop culture, but now it is definitely
back with a vengeance. Today noir can be seen in a variety of venues from noir’s early
roots in the Sherlock Holmes (TV series and films) and Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven, to
Frank Darabont’s new TNT TV series entitled L.A. Noir.
Anthony Mora and Ann Convery are a Silver Lake-based husband and wife writing team,
who have turned their sights to noir. Each have plays which will be featured as a part
of PL.A.Y Noir which will run June 8 – July 1 at The Actor’s Workout Studio in North
Hollywood, California.
Anthony Mora, whose works have been compared to Mamet, Pinter, LaBute and
Nabokov, published his first novel Bang! A Love Story in 1998. In 1999, Linda
Cardellini starred in a play adaptation of BANG! in Los Angeles and New York.
Anthony served as the playwright-in-residence at The Sidewalk Studio Theatre. The
Sidewalk produced Anthony’s play, P.O.P.: The Principles of Perfection, Bang! A Love
Story and Modern Love.
Ann Convery has had books published by Avon and HarperCollins and has been
published in various publications, including Los Angeles magazine. She is currently
finishing a non-fiction book and a book of short noir fiction set in the City of Angles.
A play previewing a film, in Anthony Mora’s Silencing Silas, a powerful businessman
hires a moonlighting cop and an aspiring actress to recover a mysterious briefcase
and “silence” Silas. But they have other ideas.
In Ann Convery’s Shoofly, a disgraced ex-cop is double-crossed again and again by a
haunted mystery woman who stole half a billion from her money-laundering lover.
Although, PL.A.Y Noir is the first foray for both into the genre, they are currently co-
writing a noir novel set in two time zones.
Punk Monkey Productions presents P.L.A.Y. Noir, which is billed as “an evening of five
short noir plays set in the City of Angels.” It runs from June 8 through July 1, 2012, on
Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m. at The Actors Workout Studio
